In our journal Information System and Smart City, a special issue is calling for papers about smart cities in China.

Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen have made significant progress in addressing the challenges of urbanization and embracing technology to improve accessibility and efficiency. As China is the most populous country in the world, it is particularly important to address the pressures of impending urbanization. They are making big bets on smart cities to ease these pressures. This special issue invites theoretical and applied cutting-edge research on the standards of smart cities in China and the unique ways they’re doing it. Here is a broad introduction to the top 10 smart cities in China.

1, Nanjing: The 11th largest city in China, what pushes Nanjing to the top however is the upcoming Sino-Singapore Nanjing Eco Hi-Tech Island, a joint project that leverages Singapore’s expertise in smart city urban planning. 2, Zhuhai: Utilizing the homegrown technology giants including Huawei, Tencent and ZTE, Zhuhai has integrated various tech, big data and AI into the real economy. 3, Shenzhen: The third most populous city of China, also known as China’s Silicon Valley for its booming tech and software development, many of the country’s tech giants such as Huawei and Tencent were founded here. 4, Hangzhou: Best known for being the home of e-commerce titan Alibaba, Alibaba’s AI City Brain system has been adopted into Hangzhou’s city management since 2016.5, Chongqing: Chongqing is also big on data sharing and integrations; innovation and development have been slowly picking up in Chongqing. 6, Guangzhou: One of the earliest adopters of smart programs and AI technology across governmental systems from weather forecasting to personal identifications.7, Beijing: The capital city Beijing is seeking to significantly improve the efficiency and convenience of public service, ranging from transportation to social security. 8, Tianjin: Much like Nanjing, this city of 15 million residents is also currently collaborating with Singapore to develop and construct a smart city. 9, Shanghai: One of the top smart cities in China (and the world) largely comes down to Citizen Cloud. This public service platformnis a one-stop point for over 1,000 different services for city residents.10, Chengdu: Chengdu has also become a leading city for China’s digital economy and was the first to implement a gigabit network, but they work slightly differently compared to other cities like Beijing and Hangzhou.
