Special Issue Information
In our journal Anti-Poverty, a special issue is calling for papers about criticism of welfare projects.
Although poverty is a serious social problem and anti-poverty is a concern by all countries in the modern world. The modern welfare project in anti-poverty has come under criticism from all corners of the political spectrum in economic and moral terms.
Many people believe that the provision of tax-funded services or transfers reduces the incentive for workers to seek employment, thereby reducing the need for work, lowering the rewards of work, and increasing poverty. Socialists, on the other hand, often criticize the welfare project advocated by social democrats as an attempt to legitimize and strengthen the capitalist economic system, which conflicts with intending to replace capitalism with a socialist economic system.
Lately, those in favor of welfare point to the many benefits the programs provide for the poor and their families. But not everyone is in favor of welfare. Reasons given for being in opposition to welfare projects include excessive taxation, creating dependency, being too expensive to maintain, fraudulent acts, helping those who don't deserve it, and so on.
None of these criticisms can be said to be satisfactory, and their continued reiteration reveals a lack of transnational perspective and a priori reasoning about empirical issues. Articles with greater historical depth and more recent research are what this journal would most like to see. Potential topics are suggested but are not limited to criticism of welfare economics, negative effects of welfare, pros and cons of a welfare state, criticism of policies in rich countries, conservative criticism of welfare projects, etc.
