Dear Colleagues,
The push for the clean energy goals in many jurisdictions calls for more development of renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and hydro. The type of future generators that are slated to come online are disproportionately wind, solar as well as energy storage. It is believed that the system would need more energy storage if more wind and solar resources are connected to the system. The costs of photovoltaic systems are also gradually declining, making it one of the most attractive investment options among other resource types. Although the cost of electrical energy storage is still expensive, they are more widely used in niche applications.
With more and more PV and storage connecting to the power grid, there will undoubtedly be more impact on the system. The impact can be technical, economic, regulatory and others. For example, operating a hybrid resource which consists of solar and storage will be a lot more complicated than operating a solar-only resource. The technical, grid-connection, financial stream, encompassing the hybrid resource will all be more complex. A lot of research work are still needed to better understand those impacts on the power grid. The articles in this special session will fill some gaps there.
